How to Install
Installation Instructions
Step-by-Step Guide
Preparation
1. Remove any floor coverings down to the base tread.
2. Remove all staples and nails to create a flat, clean surface for the new retreads.
Planning
3. Determine quantities of retreads, risers, and flush stair nose pieces needed.
➔ Tip: Order 10% extra to allow for mistakes or miscuts.
4. Identify stair type:
▪ Square cut ends — proceed with standard installation.
▪ Open-ended stairs — refer to separate open-end stair instructions.
Installation Steps
5. Start from the bottom stair and work your way upward.
6. Determine need for spacers:
▪ If the old stair nose overhang is more than ¾”, you’ll need one spacer.
▪ If overhang exceeds 1¾”, you’ll need two spacers.
➔ Spacers can be made from leftover riser material.
➔ Each riser is ½” thick; using spacers will increase thickness as needed.
7. Choose riser face
▪ Use the factory white side (similar to Sherwin-Williams Extra White) for a durable, cleanable surface.
▪ Or use the paintable side if you prefer a custom color.
8. Rip the riser to the correct height using a circular saw or reciprocating saw with a fine-tooth blade (to avoid chipping).9. Cross-cut the riser to the width of the old tread, leaving 1/16" to 1/8" gap for fitting (small gaps can be caulked later).
10. Glue the riser in place using PUR construction adhesive (like Liquid Nails).
▪ Place the factory cut edge down.
▪ Optional: Use a couple of nails ¼” from the top to hold it in place while setting.
11. Cross-cut the retread to width, again leaving 1/16" to 1/8" gap for best fit.
12. Rip the retread to the correct depth:
▪ Measure from the back of the old riser to the nose of the existing tread.
▪ Add ⅜” to this measurement.
➔ Tip: Make a sample piece from leftover scrap to test fit first.
13. Glue the retread in place using construction adhesive.
▪ Optionally, nail along the back edge (¼” from the back), which will be hidden by the next riser.
Finishing Touches
14.Repeat steps until all stairs are complete.
15.Caulk all gaps between risers and retreads.
➔ Use color-matched caulk for treads; use white caulk if keeping the factory white risers.
Pro Tip:
Taking your time during measurement and cutting will ensure a flawless, professional finish!
